Emaciation in 5 year-old Dog: a case of Calcarea Carbonica Published in: Homeopathic Medical Council of Canada Storm is a 5 year-old Shepherd Border Collie cross. His current owners adopted him two years ago from the local SPCA. He had come to them recently vaccinated against rabies and had diarrhea, vomiting and otitis. Through an allopathic Veterinarian, they had diagnosed small intestinal disease (inflammatory bowel disease) and had attempted repeated doses of antibiotics and steroids as well as hypoallergenic diet. The following diagnostics had been performed: He had a monocytosis with mild elevation of ALP on his blood work. His diagnostic testing were as follows: TLI negative, Fecal Culture negative, ACTH response was normal, Ultrasound showed thickened intestines with fine needle aspirates of mesenteric lymph nodes showing reactive normal lymph nodes. Over the past two years, there have been many diet trials and antibiotic treatments with no apparent affect. When I saw Storm, he was having watery small bowel diarrhea. Often, his stools were somewhat firm at first then his stool would be watery or soft. His weight was 61.4 pounds whereas ideally, he should have been about 70-75 pounds. He had a ravenous appetite and was emaciated. There was absolutely no fat stores covering his ribs and they could be easily seen through his coat. He was also having bouts of vomiting food and liquid, with no modalities. Two years ago, he had been fine for three months then received a full set of booster vaccines, which followed with an ear infection as well as vomiting and diarrhea. His symptoms were as follows: Yellow diarrhea Stool first hard, then soft/fluid Frequent stools Left ear waxy discharge Generally hates the rain and wet weather Family oriented, hates when the family is not together and he pouts Protective of the family Effects of vaccination When asked what he would be like if he were a person (a fun and interesting question I like to ask), the owner stated "if only there were more people like him in the world". He was started with Calcarea Carbonica LM1 potency. Three weeks later, his weight had increased to 68 pounds, his energy had vastly improved and he had no vomiting. His stools had improved about 40% with now there being periodic watery stools, on and off but with much less urgency than previously. I prescribed Calcarea LM2 at this point. A week after the Calcarea LM2 was begun, he developed a wart-like growth on his left elbow. I told the owner to wait and the wart got larger then dropped off in the following week. I look at this as a discharge from the body and strengthened vital force. He had never had warts in the two years the owners have had him, but like many of our patients, the prior history before adoption is unknown. A month after beginning the LM2, his weight has increased another pound and his energy has been good. The stools had improved even more but the owner was away for a week and during that time, he'd had a few bouts of diarrhea and one vomiting episode. When the owner returned, Storm ignored her for nearly three days. I suspect a potential emotional upset leading to the episodes of diarrhea. His stool is now quite good in general but is having periodic bouts of mucous (a move from predominantly small bowel diarrhea to large bowel diarrhea). This indicates to me movement from front to back, which is one of Hering's Law of Cure. I feel Calcarea has acted upon the vital force in this instance. Thus far, there is no indication to another remedy so we have begun an LM3 potency. I am looking forward to our next tête-à-tête. Read more Articles by Michael Goldberg, DVM... |
