Emergency Homeopathic Remedies for Summer Dear Dr. Goldberg, We are very active people who enjoy the outdoors. We go camping in the summer months and our dog Sadie is very much a part of this. Can you recommend some homeopathic remedies we should have in our emergency kit along with tape, bandage material and disinfectant? RD, BC Dear RD, There are a great number of useful remedies to have in an emergency kit. A number of companies such as Boiron and Dolisos have very good comprehensive kits available with anywhere from 18 to 50 homeopathic remedies in them in small portable cases. The following 6 remedies would be useful to have in the event of a camping emergency: Arnica 200c - this remedy is a must for sprains strains and contusions of any type. If there is pain and the pet feels at all fear of you approaching her. Apis 200c - this is a great remedy for stings in which there is pain, irritability and swelling. Commonly, it is used as a first line against allergic reactions to stinging insect. It may also be used where there are hot swollen joints as from sprains. Calendula 200c - this is an excellent remedy for any cuts or abrasions. The rate of healing in these types of injuries increases if the remedy is used. Hypericum 200c - this is very useful for nerve injuries. It is referred to as ³the Arnica of the nerves². It is wonderful if your pet injures the toes or her back. It can also relieve pain from bites. Urtica Urens 200c - I would have this on hand as it is a good burn remedy. Often in camping situations, the dog may walk on a hot rock near the fire and this remedy may prove useful. It is also good for red itchy skin from a reaction to scratches that Sadie may get as she gallops through the bush. Rhus Toxicodendron 200c - this remedy is excellent for sprains and strains. It is most useful when there is stiffness on rising but the pet is better with continued motion. It is also a very good skin remedy, which may help if there are any rashes or reactions to any plant life that cause discomfort to Sadie. Hypericum tincture would be useful as a disinfectant and should be included in the kit, as should Calendula tincture to wash and dress wounds. All the remedies can be used on an as needed basis. I usually give them every few minutes if there is a real acute problem for three or for doses or until the situation improves. Once the situation has improved, the remedy should be discontinued.
