Emaciation in 5 year-old Dog: a case of Calcarea Carbonica Dear Dr. Goldberg, What are Homeopathic nosodes, how are they used and where can I get them? K.H., BC Dear K.H., Nosode is from the Greek words nosos, meaning "disease" and eidos, meaning "from". These are homeopathic remedies that are made from diseased tissue or the product of disease. They are generally used to prevent or to treat the corresponding disease from which they are made. As an example, the veterinary nosode called "Parvo", is a homeopathic remedy made from the diarrhea of a dog who has Parvovirus infection, thus is made of the disease. Theoretically, this nosode can be used to prevent the disease "Parvo" if given as prevention during an outbreak of the disease. There are nosodes made of Canine Distemper, Kennel Cough, Rabies and feline diseases as well. Studies as to the usefulness of this approach are lacking although a British Veterinary Homeopath (Dr. Christopher Day) has had good results with Kennel Cough nosode in prevention of the disease Kennel Cough. This is available for pet owners who choose not to vaccinate and wish to try an alternative approach at disease prevention. If the pet has been vaccinated and is shown to have antibodies to the disease in question (via blood testing called titre testing), I usually do not recommend the nosodes, as the pet should be protected against the disease in question. One source of nosodes is Hahnemann Pharmacy in Los Altos, California. If you are interested in this approach, I would speak with a Homeopathic Veterinarian near you.
