Paw Problems

Dear Dr. Goldberg,

I have a two-year-old Bullmastiff who has repeatedly had surgery on her paw for an infection. The vet says that bacteria gets into the paw from cuts or punctures. She has been on a few courses of antibiotics and it continues again.

LA, Calgary

Dear LA,

You are describing most likely a secondary problem with the bacteria. The underlying problem may be anything from an allergy to a foreign substance in that area of the paw. These are quite frustrating as there may be periodic respite from the infection during the antibiotic therapy but when it stops, the infection recurs. I approach problems like this two fold. Firstly, I would make sure the nutrition is good and supplement with a good quality multi vitamin. I find as well that soaking the paw in Epsom salts and warm water tends to help alleviate any swelling and pain in the paw. I would also attempt to treat her with Silica 6c twice a day to begin with until there is any improvement in her condition at which I would decreased it to once daily then discontinue. If there is no change in the first seven days, then you may try Hepar sulfuris 6c in the same way. Both these remedies tend to aid in the elimination of foreign substance or infection.
