Prostrate Problems in Dogs

Dear Dr. Goldberg,

We have an eleven-year-old Bichon Frise who has recently been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. Have you used Saw Palmetto in treating this condition as it has such a good track record in humans?

S.

Dear S,

Although I do not routinely use herbs on my daily practice, they are never the less a useful adjunct to natural healthcare. Saw Palmetto has a definite good track record for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland) and as such, should be attempted providing you decide not to neuter your dog. Unfortunately, dosages in dogs for herbs are not well established.

Enlargement of the prostate is the result of higher levels of testosterone which decline when the pet is neutered, secondarily reducing the size of the prostate. If your dog has an enlarged prostate and no other clinical signs such as difficult urination or pain on urination, then this is a viable alternative. If there are any other signs of illness, I recommend having the problem evaluated and a thorough discussion with your veterinarian. Often, in tact male dogs will have enlarged prostates as they age and they will not be problematic. If there is no pain, I usually just monitor the condition by periodic examination. Ultrasound is also a very non-invasive and useful tool to determine of there are any other problems with the prostate such as cysts (which are also common). We have to remember that unaltered males will normally have larger prostates than altered males.

I tend to recommend homeopathic treatment if there are any clinical symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate and the owners decide not to neuter.
