Dog Pulling Leash and Coughing Dear Dr. Goldberg, My dog frequently pulls at the leash when we walk. Sometimes he will cough when he pulls too hard. Is this harming him? Dear M, There is potential harm if this type of trauma occurs time and again. It is extremely common to use a collar on dogs. The best solution to prevent excess pulling is to work with your dog and teach him to heal. This will reduce any chance of trauma to the throat or the neck. For dogs that tend to pull, you may use a gentle leader or a promise collar, which goes around the dog's muzzle and pulls from the front of the head under the chin. Harnesses fit around the chest area of the dog and are very useful under certain circumstances. There are numerous breeds that tend to have sensitive tracheas, which may be damaged by excessive pulling, such as Toy or Miniature Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers. Dachshounds are a breed which have sensitive backs. These may benefit by harness as opposed to a collar. If by chance the dog does pull and there is coughing or sensitivity in the neck, I would recommend Arnica 1m to be given every 4-6 hours for one to two days. This will reduce the swelling and the bruising. For pain in the back, the following remedies may prove useful: Rhus tox 200c if there is stiffness and better when the dog starts to move; Bryonia 200c if the dog is painful and does not want to move as it hurts on motion; or Belladonna 200c if the onset is rapid and there is great pain and discomfort. These can be used every few hours for 3 or 4 treatments or until there is any improvement. Read more Articles by Michael Goldberg, DVM... |
