The Case of Big Boy Big Boy is a very nice small dog. He is so attached to his owner that every morning when she is about to leave for work, he gets caught up in a frenzy in which he begins to walk around nervously and begins to shake uncontrollably. By the time the owner has gotten ready to leave, Big Boy is a nervous wreck. This is known as separation anxiety in western terms. This was a case that simply could not go on. Not only were these panic attacks so discomforting for the owner; Big Boy would not stop there. He would howl and cry when left and would continue this for a period of time in which the neighbour complaints would begin to arrive. This type of behavior can be treated with behavior modification therapy. The general idea is to gradually and very slowly increase the time spent away from the pet by coming and going at different intervals. This coupled to a quick and non-emotional exit are the hallmarks of this therapy. We decided that this was a good time to treat him constitutionally with homeopathy. This means that when I treat, I interview the owner and go over all the physical and the mental and emotional characteristics of Big Boy and choose a remedy that is ideal for him specifically. In this case, I focused on the symptom that he seemed to have the height of his anxiety when he anticipated the owner leaving. At this time he was unduly restless and could not stop moving around. He also had cyst on his back. Arsenicum Album was the remedy that made a difference in their lives. When arsenicum album is given to a healthy individual, it creates a fear or anxiety of the future as well as an anxiety of death. There is a severe restlessness in this remedy and the remedy has been responsible for the cure of cysts in its history. After a dose of this remedy, Big Boy seemed to change. By the next day (after a good sleep), he just seemed calmer. After a few days, not only was he calm, he did not make a fuss when the owner began readying herself for work and he simply lay down and was quiet. This behavior lasted about 2 months after which a further dose was given. At this point, he has received three doses of the remedy and has had dramatic improvement in his anxiety.
