Skin Allergy in Cats

Dear Dr. Goldberg,

We have a 6-year-old cat that scratches at her face and has worn all the fur from around her eyes. She is on a pill for fleas. She is very fearful of people and will hide from even my husband. What can wee do?

Dear MM,

If this problem has occurred since she has been on this pill, then I would definitely stop giving it. I find that any oral drug can potentially cause a reaction and if there is a change since beginning the therapy then it should be the first to be stopped. A number of cats show food allergies or parasite infestation by rubbing the fur from around the eyes these are things that may be checked with your vet. The fact that she is so fearful is also important in this case. Quite often cats will have symptoms we associate with allergies but can be due to stress. Again, the first recommendation is to go to a natural diet and preferably use a meat source that is novel to your cat.
