Skin and Ear Problems in Dogs Dear Dr. Goldberg, We are in great need of help with a 9-year-old golden retriever. He has had itchy smelly ears for a long time that every time he has to go to the vet, he now needs to be sedated in order to clean them out. He has had eardrops and other lotions to no avail. Interestingly, the dog doesnąt scratch when he is with other animals or people. Even the grass is worn away from the area he tries to rub his ears. MM, Burnaby, BC Dear MM, Unfortunately this is a very common problem with our pets these days. There are a few concerns I have. There are no easy answers and quick fixes to a chronic problem like this. I will give a few pointers as to how to get a grip on the situation but I feel that ultimately, he may be helped through the use of homeopathic treatment. With ear problems, the first thing I try to do is to recognize what may have caused it in the first place. A common problem is allergies, which result in itching of the skin of which the ears are a part. For allergies, I have had some success with Yakriton which is a liver extract discovered years ago in Japan (Antronex by Standard Process). I seems to have an antihistaminic effect and possibly can control itching without having to go to drugs. I also recommend a gentle cleansing with a vinegar and water solution that can be done at home. This is a good yeast retardant and can sometimes help out. I would also begin the dog on a natural diet, which I feel gives the body the nutritional base for healing. As for vitamins, I would begin him with vitamin C at 2500 mg twice daily and vitamin E at 400 IU once daily as these are good antioxidants which are important when there is inflammation present. Once this is in place, it is important to realize that he has chronic problem and should have homeopathic treatment, which will be specifically chosen for him. I feel this case is a good example as to how possibly the emotions may play a part in this problem. The itching occurs when he is alone. This is a very important symptom from a homeopathic point of view and would be taken into account when you have him treated. I would contact the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy (www.theavh.org) in order to find a practitioner near you and begin further treatment once the diet and vitamin changes have begun.
