Spondylosis

Dear Dr. Goldberg,

Our dog Suzi is a 13-1/2-year-old black lab mix that has recently been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylosis. She has had to go off metacam (non steroidal anti-inflammatory), which had worked well for her pain, as now she has renal failure as well as non-regenerative anemia. What types of holistic treatments are available to her to control her pain?

P.D. Alberta

Dear P.D.,

Situations such as yours are very difficult as we want to do what's best for our loved ones but there are side effects to the medications that potentially make things worse for the pet. From a homeopathic perspective at looking at disease, we see that while the medication really was improving the pain due to arthritis, the disease that Suzi has, has progressed into her kidneys and as such has gotten worse. There are a number of remedies homeopathically that may help with the pain in her joints and there are some other recommendations I would make in your case.

Firstly, I would suggest seeing a homeopathic veterinarian. The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy is a good place to start your search at Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy. I generally prescribe based on taking the case in a classical homeopathic manner and this is why I suggest you find someone who is close to you. This will take into account, the pain from the arthritis as well as kidney disease. It also focuses upon Suzi's emotional and mental sphere. I have by far had the most success with this method of treatment and prescribing using homeopathy.

Remedies that I see as possibly useful:

Aconite: Rapid onset of symptoms. If there appears to be fright. Good to use if there is soreness after motion. They feel better when in open air.

Apis: if there is restlessness as if no position is comfortable. Very sensitive to touch the sore area. Usually better in the open air and worse in a warm room. They feel better sitting up erect.

Belladonna: Symptoms of pain in which you see very dilated pupils from the pain. Rapid onset of symptoms. Very sensitive to touch. Hot head and cool limbs.

Bryonia: this is useful for times where Suzi absolutely does not want to move. If the mood is very irritable. If Suzi is better with pressure on the affected sore spots. If there is any predisposition to constipation, this remedy may be helpful.

Rhus tox: Very useful typically where Suzi is slow to rise but she feels better if she gets up and moves around. The patient who needs this remedy is always worse in the cold wet weather as well as improved greatly in warm dry weather.

As for treating kidney disease, I usually begin the patient on nutritional supplements that target the kidney. I would also recommend an increase in Omega 3 fatty acids specifically both fish oils and flax oil which may have shown anti-inflammatory properties. For arthritis, I would recommend glucosamine and MSM supplement at about 500mg each. There are a number of wonderful products out there that are available. I would give it 4-6 weeks to see if there is improvement. I usually use Calcium ascorbate or ester c supplement for cases of arthritis as well.
