Thyroid Disease in Dogs

Dear Dr. Goldberg,

My 10-year-old Alaskan Malamute has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and is currently on Levoxythyroxine. The medication has made a 200% difference in her general health. The side effects are a skin irritation in that now she will chew until she is raw. Are there any homeopathic remedies with which to treat this condition and how do I find a homeopathic veterinarian in my area?

Caroline, Kettleby, ON

Dear Caroline,

When faced with a diagnosis of Hypothyroidism, I treat it first with certain supplements that I see fit based on the individual case. There are a number of homeopathic remedies that may help but the only way to determine which is the best is to take your advice and find a practitioner to work with. Often times, the longer the pet has been on supplemental thyroid (Levoxythyroxine) the more difficult it becomes to wean them off, as the gland itself will further atrophy once on the supplements. Often the patients can be treated well despite being on the supplements. Go to www.theAVH.org and find a practitioner who is close by. This website is the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy and there is a list of classical veterinary homeopathic practitioners all over North America.
