What is Chiropractic
by Michael Friedman

Chiropractic is a natural hands on method of health care. The premise behind this non-invasive healing art is to optimize the body's innate ability to heal and regulate itself by removing any interference from the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control for the rest of the body; thus if is not functioning at full capacity, the body's natural healing ability becomes limited. Areas of interference in the nervous system are called vertebral subluxation and are caused by misalignments in the spinal columns. By adjusting the spine and removing nervous interference, the body's natural healing abilities are restored and function improves.

Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation is a simple, safe and effective method of detecting and correcting subluxations with a hand-held instrument called an activator. VOM first locates areas of interference in an animal's nervous system and then re-establishes neuronal communication to promote healing.

What Causes Subluxations?

Subluxations, or spinal misalignments, are caused primarily by stress. Physical, chemical and emotional stresses can all have an adverse effect on the spine. Slips, falls, accidents, drug reactions as well as other toxins and stress can all affect the alignment of the spine. These subluxations can be present for several years, while the effects may not be seen until much later. Much like tooth decay or high blood pressure, the effects of subluxation can go unnoticed for many years.

How Can I Tell if My Animal Needs Chiropractic?

Most often the body is able to deal with spinal misalignments by compensating, and it is not until symptoms start to appear that we know something is wrong. Pain, inflammation, muscle spasm, limping, chronic ear problems, behavioral changes, lick granulomas and many other conditions are the result of underlying spinal subluxations. Some other conditions which are commonly treated by VOM parishioners include acute and non-acute lameness, hip dysplasia-like syndromes, intervertebral disc disease, urinary and fecal incontinence, wobbler's disease, knee conditions, digestive disorders and many more.

Office Procedures

During the initial consultation, chiropractic analysis includes history taking, gait observation, spinal palpation, motion palpation and joint mobility challenge. If areas of subluxation are found chiropractic adjustments will be made. Recommendations for further care and home care will be discussed.

How Long Will This Take?

Chiropractic care takes time; since we are allowing the body to heal itself after the proper nerve functioning has been restored. As a rule, animals recover rapidly. The speed of recovery depends on - how long the problem has been present, age and physical condition, how much damage has been done and cooperation with treatment recommendations.

Chiropractic care is directed towards preventing disease in the body by keeping the spine in optimum condition. After the initial period of adjustments most animals should have regular check ups to make sure the problem does not return.
