Dental care for pets is just as important as in people. By the age of three years seven out of ten pets have dental disease. Dental problems show up as; bad breath, reddened gums and tartar. Pets require regular dental checkups. We have modern dental equipment, like the dentist, for cleaning, polishing and even extractions.

Dental disease occurs very commonly in dogs and cats with most small animals greater than 4 years of age having significant dental problems. Dental problems can also occur in young dogs and cats. Certain dental problems, such as retained deciduous teeth or malocclusions, can occur in puppies and kittens. A variety of clinical signs may be evident in animals with dental disease.

Common Signs of a Dental Problem:

  • Changes in eating habits
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Abnormal salivation
  • Oral hypersensitivity
  • Facial swelling
  • Oral hemorrhage
  • Sneezing and nasal discharge
  • Abnormal behavior
  • Abnormalities around the eye

  • The dental service at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is trained and equipped for diagnosing and treating both simple and complicated dental problems in dogs and cats. With easy access to other veterinary specialists, the dental service consults with other experts to ensure a complete and accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment of your pet.

The Skills and Procedures Offered by the Dental Service Include:

  • Thorough oral examination for the recognition of oral and dental lesions
  • Extractions, including simple, multirooted, and complicated surgical extractions
  • Dental prophylaxis, including the removal of dental calculus with power scalers and polishing
  • Routine and advanced periodontal therapy, including periodontal probing, subgingival scaling, and synthetic bone grafting of deep periodontal pockets
  • Dental radiology
  • Oral tumor management, including biopsy and surgical resection
  • Management of fractured/worn teeth, including restoration of teeth with crowns
  • Management of jaw fractures
  • Management of palatal defects, including oronasal fistulas, congenital and acquired defects
  • Management of unusual oral lesions, including myositis, osteomyelitis, dentigerous cysts, dental caries, severe stomatitis, and malocclusions

  • Continued treatment by the dental service can have a positive impact on your pet's oral and general health. In most cases your pet's dental/oral problem can be cured. In those cases in which the condition cannot be cured, it can be managed successfully. Successful treatment of painful oral and dental diseases greatly improves the quality of life for your pet.

At our hospital, all veterinary tasks or treatments performed by persons who are not veterinarians are carried out under the delegation and supervision of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who is a registered member of the BCVMA.
